Inception
Hoyts, Rialto
(5/5)
Christopher Nolan is well on his way to becoming one of the biggest and most successful directors of our time, and Inception is a shining example of his talent as a director and a story-teller. Leonardo DiCaprio heads an impressive cast as Cobb, a man who specialises in 'extraction' – that is, delving into people's dreams and persuading them to unknowingly reveal their darkest secrets. He himself just might also have some dark secrets of his own. The plot follows Cobb and his team as they are asked to delve deep into the world of dreams and attempt inception. I will say no more for fear of spoilers and no synopsis could do the beautiful complexity of the plot justice anyway.
This film is dark, multi-layered and complex, and at times so tense that you are so far off the end of your seat that you must hover. In concept, I believe that Nolan’s mind has created a new Matrix in a way, for Inception is the kind of movie that leaves you guessing and thinking once it has ended. It must not have been easy to follow the success of The Dark Knight but Inception delivers in spades. The entire cast effort is great: Marion Cotillard shines and Leonardo puts in one of his best performances yet. Try as I might, I can't fault this film. I usually do not succumb to hype or give full marks, but this film deserves it. If you have not already seen it, go now. If you have, go again.
