Islam Awareness Week
Islam Awareness Week has been around for ten years, and is aimed at providing a better understanding of Islam and its adherents’ work in the wider community. In addition, MUSA also wish to encourage the public to learn about Muslims and their beliefs.
With over 100 members, MUSA is a well-established group on campus. They publish a fortnightly newsletter that covers current news and events in the Muslim world. The association also run a brothers (men) and a sisters (women) camp once a year, where they organise a range of events, including leadership, teamwork, and confidence-building activities. This also provides an opportunity for them to learn more about their religion.
It is estimated that over 300 Muslims currently attend the University of Otago and hail from all parts of the world, including many from New Zealand. “The great thing about this religion is that it is very much a multicultural assembly with the one belief,” says Mostafa Amer.
Much like Jesus Week, everyone is welcome to come along and join in on the festivities during Islam Awareness Week. “You don’t have to be affiliated with the religion at all, we have members of MUSA who aren’t Muslims who just want to join in on the activities for fun or because they are interested in studying Islam,” says Mahmoud Amer.
