Editorial: Everything You Missed Over The Break

Welcome back. I missed you!

In the spirit of our census results coming out, I asked you guys (via the @criticmag story) what you had all been missing about Ōtepoti while you were away for the break.

April misses hearing the clocktower chime. Ryan misses Leith Liquor. A couple of your missed drugs and your dealer. Many crave the social acceptance Dunedin has toward drinking almost every day of the week. Madaline misses Ubereats, Mum’s Chicken and Rob Roy, as does Emily (who is currently having a Euro summer). Connor thought he was special by saying he missed nothing and couldn’t wait to graduate. Jackson misses the academic pressure, and Maisie wants Auntie Ling’s dumplings again.

Austin misses Ngākau and Hunter from our video team, who will soon be reappearing to bring you the Critic Survivor series. Others miss their flatmates, and having them knock on their door before entering, unlike their parents. Someone can’t wait to see their homoerotic situationship again. Freddie misses beers, and Charlotte misses The Bog. Genevieve didn’t miss much, given she stayed here the entire break (she’s empl*yed). Adorably, so many of you missed picking up a Critic magazine every Monday. The feeling is mutual. We’re glad to be back.

I didn’t get up to a whole lot over the break, personally. I left briefly for home, spending some time over at the West Coast. With Dunedin devoid of students, it felt like going from quiet to quieter. My screentime dropped to barely two hours per day, and all I did was listen to Lana Del Rey and niche house music and go for walks in the rain. It was pretty sweet. My highlight was probably when Stella (one of our Designers) sent me the new design for the Editorial page. Hope you love it!

Finally, with Castle26 still being dead in the water, I encourage all of you to write to me (hanna@critic.co.nz) so I can put all of your weird and wonderful thoughts in the mag as letters. I won’t keep you any longer. Good luck for semester 2!
