I invite you to check your sources. The person quoted does not work at the Department of Languages and Cultures.

I took HSFY and Portuguese at different times. Part of the reason HSFY is such a large programme is because the papers it provides are necessary for many different degrees, especially any of the health science papers. I have enjoyed my Portuguese classes much more than my health sci ones. Yes, the enrollments should probably be higher to be more cost effective. But now the University of Otago has forced anyone in Australasia who wants to study Portuguese to go overseas to learn it. I was incredibly happy to hear that Otago University was the only university in all of NZ (then all of Australasia)to offer Portuguese after first year when I decided I wanted to move to Portugal after completing a BSc(Hon) in Chemistry. And now I am disappointed, that noone else who is yet to leave the country cannot learn this language before they go.
