Last week was historic for student politics at the University of Otago. The Critic office sits in the Union Building slightly apart (and most definitely aloof) from the OUSA offices that inhabit the same building. Once a year, when elections are on, the place turns into a hive of activity as gossip is passed around and speculation is used as fuel for a thousand status updates.

Welcome back. This week we look at the death of the Scarfie dream. Whether rugby fiend who chugs down funnels of bourbon in your gruts or the very word ‘Scarfie’ makes you cringe, you cannot deny the culture has had an impact on your time here at Otago. And that culture is under threat.

This week we bring you the Travel Issue. What better way to procrastinate from exams than by day-dreaming about all the places you would rather be? We’ve run with the travel theme this week because there is no better time to book a summer holiday than during the depths of despair that is studying for exams.

The Government was announcing the 2010 Budget as we were going to print last week. Very inconsiderate. It meant we had to do our own analysis and not wait to see what the ODT did for us the next day. Taxing.

How are you all settling in? First week of lectures and all. I don’t do lectures anymore. I just sit in my office and try to be ‘in touch’ with what you guys want. And then make a magazine that reflects that. It’s a work in progress.
This week: drugs! You guys love drugs, right? Besides gratuitously vying for your attention (we even put a hot girl on the cover), we’ve actually explored some interesting drug-related issues. For reals. The Law Commission has reviewed the outdated Misuse of Drugs Act and made a raft of recommendations to the Government. As you may have heard, it has not been that well-received. Amy Joseph does a stellar job of reviewing the review and putting it in context. We gotta do something about our drugs laws, man!
I asked our columnists to “write something about drugs” and several of then decided to play along. A few even made some good points. The always-interesting Debatable column discusses whether welfare recipients have to undergo compulsory drug tests. Our resident right-winger, a law student himself, has got the Law Commission’s back. And the left-winger and food columnist Simonette Mallard* raises some worthy questions about the place that alcohol has in our society. And our Boy and Girl almost got laid.
Oh, and before I forget, we did Bunch of Fives on 4:20 attendees. Well worth it. Real well received.
I suppose I should now talk about some hilarious/scary/amazing drug experience I had in the past. Would seem more down with it. With you guys.
Yeah ...
*This is embarrassing. Simonette Mallard actually wrote the ‘Foood’ column on p. 38. Owen Jones wrote it last week. But that page went to print the night before this page so it is too late to fix (little trade secret there!). So, apologies to Simonette who has been a long-time food writer for us at Critic. For unrelated reasons (I swear), Simonette is leaving us for more gainful employment. We wish her all the best.
